This sauna was designed around two different types of timbers. For this project, we selected Alder wood for the interior wood, a premium sauna material prized for its smooth texture, low heat retention, and warm, golden hue.
Naturally resin-free and lightweight, Alder is perfect for sauna interiors, offering a tactile softness and aesthetic warmth that immediately invites you in. It doesn’t overheat like other woods, making it incredibly comfortable against the skin even at high temperatures.
Sourced sustainably and fitted by our in-house carpentry workshop, each panel was hand-selected and finished with precision to create a seamless, elegant lining, ensuring every surface inside the sauna looks and feels extraordinary.

Wellness Meets Architecture: Why a Custom Sauna?
As more homeowners seek to bring elements of health-focused living into their daily routines, saunas have become a cornerstone of luxury homes. But not just any sauna, a custom-designed, architecturally integrated sauna offers far more than a wellness boost. It becomes an extension of the home’s identity.
Working closely with our client, we project managed the entire process, from initial design consultations through to final installation. Every detail was considered: from the orientation of the building in the garden for optimal privacy and light, to the placement of the composite decking surrounding the sauna, perfect for a yoga session, a morning coffee, or an ice bath for the bold people out there.
Japanese Shou Sugi Ban Exterior
For the exterior cladding, we looked to tradition, and found innovation in one of the oldest timber preservation techniques: Shou Sugi Ban. Originating in Japan, this method involves carefully charring the surface of wood, cooling it, and then sealing it with oil. The result? A striking blackened grain with enhanced weather resistance and durability.
Used for centuries to protect buildings from the elements, Shou Sugi Ban offers not just longevity, but unparalleled visual depth. The subtle shimmer of the charred grain against natural daylight or ambient lighting gives the sauna an architectural presence in the garden.
Huum Heater with Smart Control
The HUUM electric heater, installed as part of our build, can be controlled via a mobile app, allowing users to preheat their sauna remotely from anywhere. Whether you’re returning from work, a workout, or a long day in the city, the sauna is ready when you are. Paired with handpicked sauna stones for even heat distribution and long-lasting warmth, the result is a flawless blend of Scandinavian simplicity and high-tech luxury.
Composite Decking for Wellness Rituals
Surrounding the sauna, we designed a composite decking platform to complete the wellness experience. Durable, slip-resistant, and low maintenance, composite materials provide the perfect setting for everything from sun salutations to post-sauna plunges.
Large enough to host morning yoga sessions or a couple of loungers, the decking area invites you to linger outside, bridging the line between indoors and out. For the adventurous, an ice bath setup was incorporated, a growing trend among health-conscious clients for its circulation and recovery benefits.
